(Sub)genre: Contemporary

He was a nameless guy in a bar–a man Grace couldn’t get out of her head…

A week later, she came home to find him sweaty and shirtless with a tape measure in hand, remodeling her loft. As a Parker-King, she’s not allowed to want someone like Noah Dalton. She’s sick of her life, though. Sick of the rules of being a Parker-King. She wants something more, even if it isn’t forever. Somewhere in history there was that one time where hot, no-strings-attached sex didn’t end badly, right? Finding comfort in the arms of a former SEAL is easy, not falling for one . . . not so much.

Noah left the military and moved to New York for one reason: his daughter. Not for some uptight businesswoman–a Manhattan elitist. So when Grace offers him the kind of relationship that no hot-blooded man can turn down, he should say no. And when her seemingly put-together life spins out of control, and his instincts to protect and save kick in, he should turn away. But he doesn’t.

Can two people from different worlds really live in the moment, knowing they’re on borrowed time, or is someone bound to get hurt?

Mod Squad

A splash of light shines beneath the door at the end of the hall. I swear I didn’t leave anything on this morning.

I touch the knob, a slight tremble moving down my arm and to my hand as I think back to the hotel in Greece.

My stomach tightens and burns, and my pulse skates to a faster speed. I slowly twist the handle, but my mind is protesting, begging me to run. My body is stiff and my muscles taut.

I should’ve run that night in Athens. Why’d I open that door? Why am I opening this one?

I inhale a deep breath, holding it—and it’s like the air in the room cocoons me and I can’t exhale.

I’m expecting the worst. Athens, part two. Another incident.

But once the door is wide-open, I see a man crouched over a wooden beam on the floor, a tape measurer in hand. The guy’s shirtless. His tanned, muscled back has a slight sheen of sweat down his spine.

He’s got to be part of the new remodel team I hired last weekend.

I bring a hand to my chest and try to calm down. To get my mind off Greece and back in New York.

“Who the hell are you?”

He’s a carpenter, right? I just want confirmation.

My hand goes inside my purse, and I search for my phone just in case I need to call the cops.

The man releases his tape measure and it retracts and snaps, falling with a thud to the floor. He slowly lifts his hands as if he can actually see me and I have a gun on him.

He rises to his feet. “Sorry. I work for Bella. She gave me the key.” He turns toward me.

My lungs deflate as if they’ve been poked with a needle, and I’m losing oxygen fast. It’s not because of Athens.

It’s because it’s…him.

Military Guy. Unless I’m wrong about him being military.

I’m never wrong.

“You.” His brows pull together and his hands fall to his sides.

I remove my hand from my purse and drop the bag to the floor. I’m more comfortable now that I know the shirtless guy isn’t some psychopath but in fact a construction worker.

But it’s the hot guy from the bar, which is still pretty damn bad.

“You’re Grace? I wasn’t expecting—”

“And what were you expecting?” I fold my arms and remain standing just inside the living area. He’s near the wall of windows overlooking the city on the other side of the room.

“I guess I pictured Grace as someone twice your age with a lot of cats.” A sheepish grin sweeps across his face.

I open my palms and glance to the left then right. “Do you see any cats?”

His smile deepens.

“And does my name sound old?” Maybe it does. The hyphen doesn’t help.

“Well, I don’t think that anymore. Now looking at you—Grace fits.”

I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean, and I don’t bother to ask. I blink and try to figure out what the hell is going on.

“Are you stalking me?” I ask instead, though I know this must be crazy stupid luck that he’s now remodeling my loft. Of the millions of people in the city…

Buried Lies Release Day & Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

To celebrate the 3rd stand-alone romance suspense novel in my #HiddenTruths series, I am running a $20 Amazon gift card giveaway. Be sure to check out the pinned post on my Facebook page for a chance to win. The giveaway is open 6/13-6/24 during the virtual book tour.

Buried Lies is different from Silenced Memories and Innocence & Betrayal, as it is told in dual 1st person point of views. To be honest, it is my favorite novel in the series, thus far, and I am so excited to share it with everyone. It is on sale for only 99cents during the book tour.

“Some people say that time heals all wounds, but no. Time only deepens the wound. And when I saw Olivia that night in the club, I realized I hated her now more than ever.”

Connor Matthews, former Marine and gun for hire, is not what you’d call the quintessential businessman. But when his father’s unexpected passing leaves the family business to him and his brother, Connor agrees to take over until his brother finishes his last tour of duty. Connor resigns himself to a life of dull meetings and paperwork, but quickly finds himself mired in his father’s web of shady business deals. And in the midst of the mess is Olivia Taylor, his gorgeous and headstrong ex-girlfriend. Since they last parted, Olivia has known nothing but grief, heartache, and loss. Despite it all, she’s built a life for herself–a life with no room for the likes of Connor Matthews. She’s survived more than most could endure, but Connor has the ability to ruin everything she’s worked so hard to achieve. She must put the past behind her in order to survive . . . but can she forgive the man who broke her heart?

*This is a STAND-ALONE contemporary romance suspense novel in the Hidden Truths series. The books may be read in any order, but characters do make cameo appearances in each book of the series. Buried Lies is told in 1st POV, alternating between the male/female protagonists.*

Hidden Truths: Stand-alone romance suspense series: Silenced Memories (Michael & Kate) Innocence & Betrayal (Aiden & Ava) Buried Lies (Connor & Olivia) Title 4 (Jake & Alexa) – coming December 2016

Snapshot of the 1st 30 Days of a first time Indie Published Novelist

So, it has been a little over a month since the launch of my first novel, Silenced Memories. I thought I would give a little bit of an update on the progress and my discoveries as a first time published author.

    • Advertising/Marketing:
      • The first 4 days of my book release, about 40 blogs hosted a book blitz of my novel. Although I am not sure if this translated into many sales, I do think it helped spread the word about my book. I used a service for this, as I just didn’t have the time to contact all of the blogs myself.
      • Goodreads giveaway – 3 signed books (2 went to the U.S., 1 to Italy)- 500+ added the book to their “to read list”
      • Aside from the release blitz, I have yet to really advertise or market. An occasional Tweet or post on Facebook is about it. The only time I have seen any direct correlation between a Facebook post/ad and sales on Amazon is when I directly targeted my hometown.
      • Why am I not investing in advertising/marketing right now? –I know there is debate about this, but I really want to have 1-2 more books available before I push my novel. I’d like my readers to be able to become “attached” to me as a writer by reading several of my books – and then they’ll be more apt to sign up for my email subscription. If I only have 1 book, they may forget me, and I need to spend money again to try and find my original customers + new ones.
      • In the first month, I sold about 500 books at a price of $2.99 E-book ($9.99- paperback)
        • I honestly have no idea if this number is a good one or not – but I am happy with the number, considering I didn’t really market (and this is my first book)
      • 80% of my sales have come from Apple.
        • Yes, this is not the norm, correct? How did this happen?
        • Well, for some reason, Apple included my novel on the “featured page”
          • I was listed as a romance suspense new release for about 7 days
          • I was selected as a Romance “Our Pick” – about 15-20 books are featured for 1-2 weeks before rotated.
          • My book was also on the Apple Featured Homepage under “popular romance”
          • Because of being featured as an “our pick” – I sold about 20-35 copies a day for 7 straight days, which got me onto the Romance Suspense Recent Best Seller List –which then got me on to the “all-time best seller list” –made it to #2 on the Romance Suspense recent best seller list at one point.
        • VISIBILTY = SALES (obviously) – I am still scratching my head as to how I ended up hitting the lottery in terms of visibility (as Mark Coker from Smashwords says you have about a 1 in 200,000 chance (or something) of an unknown being featured. So, of course, I am super happy & excited about this –but again, no idea how it happened –so I have no advice to offer in terms of how to make it happen (or for it to happen again for my next book.)
        • Clearly, the “OUR PICKS” listing was what drove my sales –because as soon as they rotated books and picked the next group of new releases, my sales slipped to less than 15 a day – and then less than 5 a day. It has been a bit like the stock market in terms of sales the last week.
        • Also, Apple’s best seller lists are DIFFERENT than Amazon’s. Amazon uses algorithms to choose their authors – Apple has a marketing team (humans!) who make the decisions.
        • My book is also listed as a ‘customer also bought’ book for other novels
      • Without being a KDP member, I don’t really see any sales, unless I advertise- and by advertising I mean I have spent maybe a total of $20 on Facebook ads.
      • I basically have anywhere between 0-3 sales a day (e-book/paperback)
      • My first 3 days of sales were about 50 (and I think 40 of those were people I know!)
      • My book (despite only 7 reviews) is listed as a ‘customer also bought’ book for other novels
  • B&N/Kobo + everyone else
    • 9 total sales (e-book sales) – So far my paperback has only been purchased on Amazon and not at BAM, B&N, etc (where it is sold online)
    • Amazon – 7 reviews – and I think the number is low here because so many people who bought the Kindle know me (and cannot leave a review)
    • Goodreads-12 ratings/10 written reviews
    • B&N- 4 reviews
    • Apple- 32 ratings/5 written reviews
    • Blog review

Okay, so here is an honest picture of a self-published novelist in her first 30 days. I am pretty sure my numbers will drop, unless I begin to advertise (but again, I think I am holding off until the March/April release of my 2nd book) . . . I am providing these numbers and this information to other indie authors who are curious about results. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Official Release Day for SILENCED MEMORIES!

I am excited to announce the official release of my romance suspense novel, Silenced Memories. Thank you everyone for your support over these last few months!! Enjoy a few excerpts below.

Book Blurb:

Kate Adams has never found it difficult to keep a professional relationship with her clients . . . but then she’s never had a client like Michael Maddox. From the moment she arrives in Charlotte, Kate is tongue-tied by the devastatingly gorgeous former Marine and intelligence genius turned multi-millionaire entrepreneur. Michael seems at first glance to be the perfect catch, except for one problem. He doesn’t do relationships. And Kate doesn’t do one-night stands. But as the tension mounts between them, Kate discovers she has larger problems—an untraceable stalker . . . and a dangerous past. When Michael offers his protection, Kate is grateful, and yet afraid. For as they grow closer, she realizes that Michael has his own secret past. And while he might save her life, he will surely break her heart.

3 Excerpts from Silenced Memories: The novel is told in 3rd person, but readers get a glimpse into the minds of Kate Adams and Michael Maddox (in differing scenes) . . .

Excerpt from Chapter 3: Kate Adams (her POV) & Michael Maddox – at his office

“Did you tell Julia that we’ve met already?”

Startled, Kate turned toward him, her soft eyes looking at him from beneath long eyelashes. Her arched brows gave hint of her embarrassment. “I am so sorry about your shirt. You should let me pay for it.”

“Did you know whom I was last night?” he asked with a deep voice.

She touched the back of her neck, as if working out a kink. “Yes.”

“Why didn’t you say something?” His eyes narrowed on her, and he took a step closer.

“I. . . .” Could she tell him she had been completely tongue-tied by his devastating good looks? “Honestly, I did not think you would remember me, and then I was in a hurry, so I just kind of rushed out when your friend showed up.” Her poker face was failing her.

“You thought I would forget you?”

His words sent shivers dancing up her spine, and she could have sworn she had a heart palpitation. She bit her bottom lip.

“If we are going to work together, I would strongly suggest you not do that,” he murmured, staring at her lips. His smoldering blue eyes turned a shade darker.

She allowed his words to hang in the air for a moment, free of gravity, as she contemplated the appropriate response. She couldn’t help but wonder if she’d wind up being the fourth planner fired. Was he attracted to her, or was it a game he was playing to unnerve her? She chose to ignore his comment and maintain professionalism. “Mr. Maddox, how would you feel about an auction?”

“Please, call me Michael.”

Excerpt from Chapter 4: Kate Adams (her POV) & Michael Maddox on the dance floor

Her heartbeat did a cowboy quickstep as he reached for her and held her as if he owned her. Somehow, having Michael’s rock hard body pressed against her was more than okay. “I danced pretty much all my life,” she replied. When he touched the small of her back, moving her closer to him, her eyes widened and she gasped.

There was a shift in the mood of the room as the music changed to a low tempo beat. The sound of the drums thumped in her ears, matching the pounding in her heart. Michael kept his eyes on hers as their bodies collided against each other in rhythmic movement to the music. He was a great dancer, she decided. Very sensual. She breathed in his intoxicating smell and felt herself grow dizzy with desire. Please do not fall for this guy.

“You okay?” Michael pulled away.

“Yeah, I just . . . you ever get the feeling that you are being watched?” Her thoughts, scrambling, had landed on the only other thing on her mind—the creepy text she’d gotten the other day.

“I am sure a lot of guys in here are watching you, Kate.” He reached for her waist in an almost protective manner.

“No, not like that. I mean . . . never mind. Sorry.” Her cheeks burst red, as bright as fireworks on the Fourth of July.

“Is someone bothering you?” His eyes narrowed and he began scanning the room as if on sniper duty, preparing himself for an enemy attack.

“What? Um . . . no.” She took a step back. “I should get going. My hotel is not too far.”

“Come on, I will take you.” He placed his hand on her forearm. “There is no way I am letting you walk alone.” He shook his head. “No way.”

Kate stared at him with wide eyes. “Relax. I don’t need a babysitter.” Or do I? The image from the text flashed into her mind again. But she was too stubborn to take Michael up on his offer, despite her nerves. He removed his hand from her arm, and she felt a few degrees cooler without his touch.

Excerpt from Chapter 7: Michael’s POV- Kate and Michael playing poker

“I’m all in.” Kate looked up at Michael and tilted her head.

He kept his eyes on her as his friends to her right bowed out of the game. When it was back to him, he studied her, checking for tells. She swallowed and adjusted back in her seat. That was new. Was she bluffing?

Or was he just feeling sexual tension from her? The magnetic pull between them was making it hard to breathe. He reached for his chest, as if ready to loosen a tie that was strangling him, only he was wearing a T-shirt. “Is it hot in here?” he found himself asking as he stood up from the table.

“Come on, you afraid of a challenge? A duel of the sexes?” Jerry joked.

Michael tried to focus, but he found himself consumed by his past, by the memories he had tried to silence. Why was this happening now?

The rocky terrain as his boots slipped on the climb.

Torn flesh.

He turned away from the table, not wanting Kate to see him like this. His throat constricted, and he wondered if he was choking. He opened the patio door and walked outside. He braced against the railing and closed his eyes, trying to shut out the steady stream of images that exhausted his mind.

“You all right?” Jerry asked. He slipped through the door and leaned against the railing next to him. “Kate wanted to check on you herself, but I figured you’d prefer not.”

Good call. He inhaled a sharp breath and opened his eyes. “I’m fine. Really.” He tucked the painful memories back inside and rubbed his hands over his face. “Be right in.”

Self-Publishing Update

I have spent a lot of time seeking advice from other indie authors on this blog, and I just wanted to provide a run-down of what I actually did in regards to the publication of my first novel – on kind of a step-by-step basis. Hope it helps anyone who is in the midst of their self-publishing journey!

Writing Process:

  1. First Draft
  2. Sent out a sample of chapter 1 to many different editing companies (they offer a sample for free) –> Found the right match with –>Revisions based on feedback I received
  3. Draft –> Developmental Editing (
  4. Revisions of draft –> Copy/Line Editing (
  5. Additional revisions/changes –> Reading fee / copy editing on new additions (
  6. Final Draft –> Proofreading (
  7. Two additional checks for proofing (just in case anything was missed)
  8. Final Draft –> Beta Readings

Formatting: I originally planned on hiring out for the formatting process. I was terrified of messing it up. I was going to spend the $250 or so on it – but after reading the Smashwords style guide & Createspace guidelines – I realized I had already formatted my book almost to their standards. Why pay out then? After a frustrating few days, I was able to tweak my book to meet the guidelines, and I managed to upload with zero errors for e-books in epub & mobi, as well as my paperback book. On my 2nd book – I will start the formatting process from the beginning (not at the end!)

Cover Design: I hired to create my cover. After feedback on the first cover, I realized it was not the right cover. I paid a little extra money, and my designer was able to provide me with a new cover –and I love it.

ISBNS: I decided to purchase my own ISBNs. I bought the block of 10. It made much more sense to buy 10 then to purchase 1, especially because I used 3 ISBNs for my first novel. Originally I thought I could just use 2 ISBNs (1 for e-book, 1 for paperback). When I uploaded my manuscript to Smashwords- I read that they like a different ISBN then one used for Kindle. So, my Kindle Edition has its own ISBN. One of the reasons I wanted my own ISBNs- is that eventually I plan on using Ingram Sparks (which requires your own ISBN).

E-BOOK- I uploaded to Kindle directly and made my book available for pre-order. I then chose Smashwords as the distributor for my e-books everywhere else. I would have preferred to upload to itunes directly, but I heard you need a MAC to do that (and my MAC suffered a brutal death last year). I like that Smashwords allows you to choose the amount you want to have readers sample from your book – I only wish that percent was the same in all the places they distribute your book (B&N, Kobo, etc.). What I don’t like about Kindle Pre-Order –is that they don’t allow readers to SAMPLE your book at all until the day of the release. I usually don’t purchase books until I have sampled them (unless they are by an author I am already an avid fan of). I have also offered a long preview/sample of my book on goodreads (pdf file).

CREATESPACE – I chose Createspace (without extended distribution). I set my price to be the same as my competitors for a 6×9 copy. When perusing the bookstores (most books were between 8.99-10.99- so I chose 9.99). You make less money on a paperback if purchased through Amazon and not Createspace than on an e-book, but I did not want to increase the price of my book to make more (especially as an unknown author). I don’t anticipate selling many paperback copies right now, but I will use those for giveaways, etc. *I did not chose extended distribution because I am in the NEGATIVE for every book sold at my price range – and as I said, I did not want to increase my price.

INGRAM SPARKS – I will be uploading my book to IngramSparks soon (which will be my avenue for extended distribution). In order to have a chance in Hades at getting your book into any brick and mortar store – you must choose a 55% wholesale discount/accept returns. 55% discount means: the bookstore gets the book at 40% less than retail (because 15% goes to Ingram). You pretty much make no money on this though after printing costs, which is why most people choose the 40% wholesale discount –but that means (25% less than retail for bookstore, 15% for Ingram). Most bookstores will not go for that – not enough skin in the game. Considering this is my first book, and I do not anticipate getting into a bookstore (even at the 55% wholesale discount – I will probably just choose 40% and sell online).

  • I went with Xpresso Book Tours for a book blitz to be held Sept 15th-18th (my book is released the 15th). There will be giveaways through rafflecopter.
  • Press Releases – I have sent out press releases to a few local places (online sites) – for an article about my novel (as a pre-order). I have heard back from one newspaper so far (out of the 4)- who have accepted my press release. I will send the majority of my press releases out post release of my book for 1 main reason. *Since the majority of clients seem to purchase e-books through Amazon (and since Amazon does not provide a sample) – I worry that this will discourage pre-order sales, so I think it is best to wait on marketing until the book is out & people can download a free sample.
  • Goodreads – will have a giveaway
  • Local Event – I will be having a book launch/release party at a local restaurant, which happens to be a supporter of my work & will have signed copies/giveaways, etc.
  • Author webpage

Am I forgetting anything? Any questions you want answered? Anything you did differently or would suggest? Thanks for reading! Check out a copy of my novel at: Amazon, Kobo, or B&N & download a free sample of the 1st six chapters on Smashwords or the first 8 chapters on goodreads!

*BTW- for those who have submitted work to “Authors to Read” – I am happy to report that a lot of traffic to that page is coming from pinterest – so definitely use pinterest when you are marketing your book(s)!
